The ultimate goal of palliative care education is to ensure that patients with palliative care needs, and their families, receive high quality care so that those involved in their care know what to do and how to do it well and are able to exercise wise judgement when doing it. The ability to teach others about palliative care and to learn from them in return is therefore crucial. This chapter considers how learning and teaching in palliative care differ from learning and teaching in other fields and presents theories, models, and frameworks relevant to palliative care education. These theories and models are referred to in subsequent chapters.
