The Nuffield Department of Medicine offers opportunities for summer internships to undergraduate and Masters students from some of our key collaborating countries. We currently offer several fully-funded awards to students from Mexico. You will get the opportunity to work in a laboratory environment with an Oxford University Principal Investigator (PI) and their team in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine for a period of approximately eight weeks. You will also get the opportunity to live in Oxford – one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the UK.

Funding: This year the department has several country-specific awards for internships. The awards will cover the travel and living costs for a two-month internship in a departmental research laboratory. The scholarship awarded is to the value of £3,000. Accommodation will be arranged at an Oxford college for students funded through these awards and costs will be deducted from the award and paid to the college on your behalf. The award payments will be made in regular instalments after your arrival in the UK.
Funding for students from Mexico: fully-funded internships are available for up to three students from Mexico. Students from our partner institutions are encouraged to apply and should discuss with their home institutions alternative funding options.

In the picture, Summer Intern Javier Ríos Valencia, from Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, conducting experiments in July 2016 to clone genetic sequences of Chikungunya virus into plasmid DNA. After amplification of DNA using techniques of polymerase chain reaction (PCR), DNA is separated by electrophoresis and purified from agarose gels, by visualising and cutting the bands containing DNA. The material is used for subsequent ligation into another destination plasmid that will be used for protein expression.

Elizabeth Irina Figueroa Juárez (John Christianson), MSc student in Biomedicine at the graduate program of Biological Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)
I have had the opportunity of working in biomedical research in different projects in Mexico mainly at the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition, Salvador Zubiran (INNSZ). During my last 3 years, I have been working with Dr Claudia Tovar-Palacio at the Nephrology and mineral metabolism department with projects involved in the role of Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress in renal lipogenesis.
In Oxford, I have been part of the Ludwig Institute of Cancer Research (University of Oxford) working with Dr John Christianson's lab with different cellular stress inductors and the ER associated degradation. The experience as an intern of the NDM program that I am part of has been an irreplaceable opportunity that has helped me grow up as a researcher, as a student and also as a person. I think that this international collaboration program has motivated me to continue in biomedical research, and has given me a global vision of the impact that research has in the medicine development.

My name is Francisco Alejandro Lagunas Rangel, I’m studying the last year of a master’s degree program in Health Sciences at the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, UMNSH, in the city of Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico. My thesis project is focused in Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a phenotypic and genetically heterogeneous group of hematological diseases, thus nowadays I’m working in the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research under the direction and guidance of the Dr Skirmantas Kriaucionis by the NDM Summer Oxford Internship Programme 2016 to learn about epigenetic mechanisms of DNA methylation and hydroxymethylation involved in cancer. As part of the NDM, the project that was appointed to me is awesome comparing the DNA methylation of naked mole rats, specie characterized by the remarkable longevity and its resistance to cancer, with other rodents and the human.

I did the switch from clinical medicine to science thanks to the program “PROINMED- MEDICI” and Dr Citlaltepetl Salinas of the FES Iztacala-UNAM in Mexico City, which gave me the opportunity to start a research project during the last year of Med School. I started working with Dr Ethel García-Latorre from ENCB-IPN, who has enthusiastically encouraged what until now has been my career in science and immunology. In Mexico, my research projects are related to the immunopathogenesis of Spondyloarthritis, and, I usually participate in the activities of the Mexican Society of Immunology and I am part of the editorial board of the student journal Conscience and art.
Here in Oxford, I’m working in the group of Dr Alison Simmons in projects related to the signaling of pattern recognition receptors like NOD2 in Crohn’s disease s and its relationship with the presentation and cross-presentation of antigens; also learning about first-class techniques like single-cell sequencing, gene knock out, and phospho-proteomics. I really think that projects like this internship program will help to get more and more high-lever researches with an international vision in many areas, so, I hope that many students apply to receive this great opportunities.

Hey there, worldwide student community! I am Javier Ríos Valencia, a Medicine Mexican student who went through the NDM Summer Internship selection process and who today can pronounce itself as the luckiest and happiest at his university of origin in Morelia, Michoacan: "Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo". For about eight weeks I will have the opportunity to know and learn from one of the most worldwide recognized professors, Prof. Arturo Reyes-Sandoval and his team who nowadays are leading "Emergent Disease" science area. I also will be able to develop and set laboratory techniques which are not known already for all the frontier science worldwide community as plasmide cloning and Zika virus protein isolation. In addition, all this time the Oxford University campus will be my hometown, which means I can consider myself as a much benefitted student who with any doubt will pursue his postgraduate academic degree at the world’s oldest and most coveted university. Do not hesitate about applying if your expectations about growing and learning are unstoppable and your desire for becoming a worldwide investigator is insatiable.

As I move forward in my medical career, I see myself remaining strongly involved in medical research as well as continuing my passion for helping in the social development of communities. My experience at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, University of Oxford, as a member of Ratcliffe team has been personally and educationally enriching. I have been able to work with oxygen sensing mechanisms and to examine the response of different tissues to hypoxia. In Mexico, my research focus is the role of growth factors; specifically, Insulin-like Growth Factor 1, and its role in the pathophysiology of several human conditions. With my continuing interest in molecular medicine, I am convinced, more so than ever, that research, when implemented properly and in conjunction with clinical practice, can improve the lives of thousands and help close the gap that has prevailed over the centuries and which has caused the suffering of unrepresented minorities. This globe needs more of that.

My experience in Oxford was magnificent. I had the opportunity to work at the Centre for Clinical Vaccinology and Tropical Medicine under the supervision of Dr Christine Rollier. My work consisted in testing transgene expression in different adenoviral vectors in order to evaluate their efficacy to deliver vaccines. I enjoyed everything from my stay at the University: the library of St. Hilda’s College, the beautiful parks, the city, etc. I met other interns that are now some of my best friends. Right now I am beginning my clinical years as a medical student in Tec de Monterrey’s Medical School, and I am finishing my thesis project to obtain the B.A in History at UNAM (yes, I’m a double major). After I get my medical degree I am applying for my residency in surgery in the US, and hopefully, after that, I’ll go back to Oxford for the DPhil in Surgical Sciences. Being part of the Summer Interns was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. I worked with Professor Reyes-Sandoval group in the construction of adenoviral vectors for the Chikungunya vaccine, which involved the use of different molecular biology techniques as well as the use of bio-informatics tools to achieve the desired results. I worked side by side with top class scientists and I also had the opportunity to participate in different workshops imparted by Oxford researchers, which helped me familiarize with new and better techniques in the area of infectious diseases. But if I have to choose the most rewarding aspect of the Summer Internship was the fact that when the program finished I was encouraged by Professor Reyes-Sandoval to apply for a postgraduate degree which eventually resulted in my acceptance in a master degree in a well-known university in the UK.
Melissa Elizarras Bermuda (Martin Bachmann)
Before starting my DPhil at NDM I completed my B.Sc. program in Biotechnology engineering at Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Mexico. After that, I moved to Saudi Arabia to study a master’s degree in Bioscience at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. My research was focused on the screening and identification of enteric viruses from the Hajj, the largest annual mass gatherings in the world, by applying molecular biology techniques and next-generation sequencing. I also obtained the NDM Summer Internship Award that allowed me to get involved in the application of Virus-like Particles (VLPs) as vaccination agents forPlasmodium vivax in the laboratory of Prof. Arturo Reyes-Sandoval. Currently, I am studying a DPhil in Clinical Medicine in the Jenner Institute and my research interests are in Vaccinology, Virology and Translational Medicine.

I worked at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research during my NDM Summer Internship. There, I worked in the Mads Gyrd-Hansen lab with a project focusing on the role of non-degradative ubiquitin modifications in cancer and innate immunity. I was attracted to this line of investigation due to the important role of the immune system in cancer pathophysiology and its enormous potential for the development of new therapeutic options. My experience at the NDM enhanced my skills in research activities, reinforced my interest in basic immunology research and provided me with an insight into cutting-edge scientific activities. At the moment, I am completing my last year of medical school. I plan to continue working in cancer immunology and to pursue a career in surgery.
